How tmc’s digital products support the Marschbahn upgrade

The railway line between Hamburg and Sylt, known as the Marschbahn, is set to undergo a major transformation. By the mid-2030s, this important north-south corridor will be fully electrified, reducing emissions and increasing capacity on one of Germany’s key rail links.

Essential railway infrastructure measurements

Before construction can begin the route must be thoroughly surveyed and assessed. To support this initial step, tmc contributed its digital measurement expertise to a first survey run with a dedicated measurement train. Our colleague Arvid Polak was on board to oversee data collection and ensure seamless operation of the onboard systems.

Joining the effort were our colleagues from Rail Track Analyzer (RTA), who contributed their Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system. This technology allows teams to examine the subsurface conditions along the track, providing crucial insights into the track bed and track bed health as well as other factors that may influence the electrification project.

The mission was commissioned by Obermeyer Infrastruktur, a long-time partner of tmc. We’re proud to support their planning and engineering work with precise, real-world data from the field. This collaboration illustrates how digital tools and strong partnerships can accelerate infrastructure upgrades in a sustainable and informed way.
